Tea time | Why Oscars 2019 are especially important to watch?

21/2/19

Hello, dear readers! In the first days of January I told you about some changes and new types of sections (and others that disappeared) which we'll see in the blog during this year. One of these sections is Tea Time. I didn't designed it because that's peculiar of literary blogs. The point is writing posts about whatever topic and in English –I have to improve it. Usually, I've told you about literature, but in this case I decided that talking about Oscars 2019 is owing to the important things that could have happened that day. So, let's go!

The most obvious and relevant thing is about Roma, Alfonso Cuarón's film, a Mexican director whose movie was nominated for Best Picture and Foreign Language Film. In the almost century of Oscars Prizes, the Academy has nominated only four movies in both categories at the same time: Z (1969), La vita è bella (1997), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Amour (2012). They never won both, just the best foreign film. For the first time, "Roma" has a lot of posibilities to achieve that and it would be historical.

Also, we can't forget the polemical situation of United States, Trump's government and how it's affected foreign people, especially Mexican people. If Alfonso Cuarón wins the Best Picture prize, he'll become one of the five Mexican directors who has won this award in the last six years. The others were: Guillermo del Toro by The Shape of Water (2017); Alejandro González Iñárritu by The Revenant (2015) and Birdman (2014); and again Alfonso Cuarón by Gravity.

First and foremost, Roma is a film about race and the mexican culture in Mexico City. It tells a story with a lot of contrast between low and high classes, also the most occidental Mexican people and the aborigine's heirs. The couple of actresses who play both roles are nominated for Best Actress (Yalitza Aparicio) and Best Supporting Actress (Marina de Tavira). What's more, we can see that the 91st Academy Awards has a strong prominence of women.

Just look at the other great nominees: The Favourite, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. The movie, which is focus on political power games, has three excellent actresses who consist of three nominations: Best Actress (Olivia Colman) and Best Supporting Actress (Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone).

Finally, Black Panther was the surprise in the announment of nominees, it's the first superheroe movie in history chosen by the Academy for the Best Picture award. It's a well-known fact that some genres are avoid by the Oscars, which's the case of superheroe movies. Moreover, the film has another peculiarity because Black Panther is the first black superheroe that jumps into cinema and it blends an African and Afroamerican style at the same time.

The Oscars are one of the most important ceremonies of the year, an international culture appointment which this time approaches (the small hours between sunday's 24 to monday's 25 in Spain) in a pretty interesting way. There are a lot of reasons to follow this gala and pay attention because could the history of cinema could have a new chapter.

I hope you like this new section in the blog. If you do, please tell me in the comments section.

  2. Hi Alex!
How brave of you to start a new section entirely in English! Thanks for all the information, I'm not really a super fan of the Oscars, but I see that this year's nominations could have made history, although I just saw that Rome did not win...
    Lots of kisses!
